There are many theories about why dogs jump and you have probably heard about more than one. We won’t go into those.
We will talk about how to stop it 🙂
With some dogs, you pushing them away and even telling them to get off of you is the attention they are seeking and therefore the reward.
For a dog like this, the best way to stop the behavior is to withhold ALL attention!
Ways to do that are:
As soon as your dog jumps up, turn your back on him. Cross your arms over your chest, and don’t make a sound. If the dog runs around to jump again, turn away again and keep doing that until he stops. This way he doesn’t get the reward he’s working for (your attention).
You can also try removing yourself completely. If your beloved pet jumps up when you walk in the door, turn around and walk back outside. If he jumps up when you’re inside, walk out of the room. Wait a moment, and step back inside. Repeat this until your dog is calm.
REMEMBER TO REWARD THE BEHAVIOR YOU WANT! ALL FOUR ON THE FLOOR!
