DOGS AND CATS AND OTHER ANIMALS, OH MY!

Dogs and other animals:

Nothing will work unless you have first established yourself clearly as the pack leader, alpha, parents, CEO, boss, or whatever you choose to call it! You must put this in place first.  (I can send you a list of “Rules” to help you do this).

Dogs may interpret other animals be it cats, cows, sheep or horses in a number of ways. They could see them as:

  • Danger –  something to be attacked or chased away
  • Prey – something to be attacked and eaten
  • Play time – something to chase, and have fun with like you would another dog
  • Job – something to chase, herd and round up

Regardless of what your dog thinks, and it may well be a combination of these things and you need to show your dog the right way to behave.

Stay focused on your goal and how you want things to be.

The method that I am going to explain is simple and straight forward, however it often requires patience. Needless to say you have to convince your dog that you are the pack leader.

The method for bringing a cat and dog together:

  1. Make sure that you have clearly established yourself as the leader! This may well take a week or two, in which case put off attempting the next stage.
  2. Ensure that your dog has had adequate exercise and is not in a stressed state.
  3. Carry out all of this in silence, with no patting or touching your dog.
  4. Settle your cat in the room, with your dog outside. If it is a cat that will run away then hold her tight or put her in a cage where she is safe. If she is a confident cat then place her somewhere high where she can feel safe.
  5. Position yourselves so that you are not all staring at the cat or the dog but carrying on as normal.
  6. It is a good idea if the cat is maybe off to the side or slightly behind you.
  7. Bring your dog in on a lead, keeping then far away from the cat and make sure you are prepared to ask the dog to stop and change direction if necessary.
  8. If your dog gets excited, lunges, barks or becomes stressed then immediately without a word take him outside the room and close the door.
  9. Remember that this must be done when your dog is in a calm, well exercise state. If your dog becomes stressed leave it and try again later or the following day.
  10. If your dog sees the cat there every day it will become less and less excited. This is desensitization.
  11. You may repeat this exercise several times in one session, waiting for your dog to calm down again before returning to the room.
  12. Also, it is important to make positive association between dog and cat by making something wonderful happen when they see each other that doesn’t happen any other time (boiled chicken for the dog and maybe tuna for the cat).
  13. All the time focus your energy and show your dog the way you want him or her to behave.

THIS IS STEP 1!  If you try this and become ready for step two, email me and let me know.
